Not being in the music industry i have no insight into this, but I
certainly believe it. I think it was Willie Nelson who said something
to the effect of if he or Johnny Cash tried to get into country music
now, it wouldn't have happened.

Yeah, I agree that they tried to put up the "faces" that would sell.
But I think that was done as a very deliberate attempt to move country
music away from the "stigma" of being "old country" (dog, truck, beer,
etc) and into the more marketable "new country" (look how good looking
we are!). Worst thing that could have ever happened to country music?
 3 words. Achy. Breaky. Heart.

I think today there's been somewhat of a natural correction in the
market. Yeah, it's still "new country" and yeah, "the look" probably
still plays more of a factor than it should. But I think the talent
level has risen a bit. You may need the look...but looks alone won't
necessarily compensate for a lack of talent (IMO of course...I've got
no hard data upon which to base that).

As far as one-hit-wonders tho...doesn't that happen in all genres?
Weren't most top 10 songs of the 80's by one-hit-wonders? Name me one
other tune by that 8675309 guy :)
