It was mad for a while... there were people in town selling cases of beer
for upwards of $200.

Well... that's a surprise. It usually looks like a shithole. ;^P

Actually that's one reason the Boy Scouts offered to clean up - they got to
keep anything they found. Lots of tents, camping gear, tarps, etc.

I'm not sure if you know the history there. It's a little ironic.

You see that whole area (the field) was on the short list for a NY State
"mega dump" landfill designed to serve three counties. Although the site
was the least centralized it was also in the one of the poorest areas in the
poorest county.

As you might imagine Saugerties and Woodstock didn't think much of having a
giant landfill be the first thing you saw as you exited the Thruway.
(Saugerties businesses cater to the skiers on their way to North Mountain -
lots of antique shops and such - a big landfill, it was thought, would make
people less willing to explore.)

The idea was that Woodstock II would somehow "legitimize" that land. There
was even some talk that the concert would be so big that the land could be
turned into some sort of tourist attraction in its own right.

Of course the irony is that a landfill may have actually ended up less
destructive to the land than the concert was. ;^)

I think in the end, however, the plans for the "megadump" just fizzled out
anyway.
