For just plain media playing I've been insanely impressed with my Avel Link
DVD player.  I did a review here:

Most of problems with the software in that review have been addressed with
firmware updates (including compatibility with my component auto-switcher).

It's high-def, plays anything I throw at it and a recent firmware even added
DIVx subtitle support.  I can use several pay services (videonow, Rhapsody,
etc) and it supports most NAS storage out of the box.

It can't record of course (we've got the Comcast DVR for that) but since
getting it I've had no desire to set up a HTPC.

Just another option for those that, um... "acquire" a lot of computer video.
