I've realized what the problem is. It's not the word marriage they want to use. They want our culture to teach that gay couples are equally as nature intended as heterosexual couples. Nature gets in the way there but science can help. Nature has been that way forever (Gruss) and now we want to change the understanding of it. If gay couple could have sex and produce children naturally, where the child has DNA from both parents, then they would be accepted as core family values. Since they can't, without the help of science that is, they are left with civil unions. This means they are not equal, but our laws can't change nature. We accept that they are truly in love and can do an excellent job raising children but we can't force people to believe a family of two fathers and children are just as natural as a mother and father. We don't have a problem with the substitution but don't try to tell our children there's no difference, or that heterosexual marriage is as or more queer than gay marriage.
The problem I see is if there's no moral behavior as a guide then sex becomes a non-issue. When there are no guidelines to sex the whole sanctity of marriage gets lost and culture loses its foundation. Even if you don't agree being faithful to one person and having a strong family structure is what keeps us civilized, I feel without these guidelines there are no core beliefs to keep people in check. I'm not saying gay marriage will erode those beliefs, I'm saying teaching kids that it doesn't matter who they couple with will.
