We are using the cisco IP phone 7940 series what are you using?  Have
you figured out how to add additional ring tones, besides those that
come standard?

If you don't have IP telephony at your office, this may not interest
you.

We use Cisco equipment and phones for our phone service.  Each phone has
an XML browser as well as a very simple web server.

A while back, I created some simple services that can be accessed from
the phone display.  The phone devices have softbuttons that can be
programmed individually.

My test app was a list of birthdays of our students and employees.  You
can see today's, and the next two week's, worth of birthdays just by
pushing a couple of buttons on the phone.

This week, due to the tornados in our city, some student organizations
decided that UE did not provide adequate warning in these situations.

So, I figured out how to "push" a request into the Cisco phones.  The
request then forces the phone to create its own request to a web page
that I specify.  In addition, I can force the phone to play a certain
ring tone.  We may pursue this solution to warn students/employees of
important issues just by using the phone system.

This is some very cool stuff and, of course, it's powered by CF on the
back end!

I'm sure you can see the benefits of the ability to push information to
the phones.

However, do you realize the potential for misuse and fun?  Heck, with
the click of a button on a web page, I can make any phone, on our
network, ring and change the display.  "Why the hell does my phone ring
and there is no one on the other end?"

Or, if I am in a boring meeting, I can make my phone ring, on cue, and
leave early because of "that important issue in the server room".

Jeez, what fun it is to be a programmer.
