Kalamazoo is fine, but it's a smaller town. Detroit is bummer, but the norther suburbs are really nice (e.g., Clarkson, Goodrich, etc.) if you don't mind an hour drive to the airport. The winters are less than MN and we barely have winters here anymore. I used to play snow football every Thanksgiving - yesterday I was outside in shorts - so nothing to worry about there. My advice, however, would be to do you and your kids a favor and not pay for their college. Make it known that their education is up to them and they'll appreciate it and choose a career, or short term job track, that pays for itself.
