Correct, and gnosticism adopted Christ ... which is why you have the gnostic
gospels, such as St. Thomas.  Gnosticism was a big threat to first and
second century Christianity.

As far as I know, Martin Luther was the very first Protestant and later on
the Church of England was founded due to King Henry VIII.
