Well, they could also have just been for a "sparkle" effect.  They were
pretty damn small, so I couldn't imagine them being useful from where
they were.

Unless they were well-hidden, I didn't see any photographers in the
area.

I just felt pissy today because the last few days have been nothing
short of hectic-for-no-reason.  I'm sick of the way the holidays have
been turned into a rush to get here and there.  Families get pissed
because "my son had to go to his new wife's family dinner" and "my
sister went to her new husband's dinner".  My reply: "So what?"  Let
them go somewhere else.  That leaves more pie for us!

For the flashes, it is possible those strobes were tied to cameras via a
pocket wizard or something.

The normal camera flash usually can't cover that much area, and if you
are a press photographer you want good depth, and usually rely on a
secondary strobe to add that for you.

I know when I do sports or stage based shots I usually have an 1800 watt
strobe light or two positioned to add plenty of light.
