Nothing new here; there have been people making crackpot suggestions
about hybrids since the number cruncher finally gave the politico's
the bad news: The increased use of alternative energy for
transportation is going to have a direct negative effect on gasoline
and oil sales. Not a good thing when 49/50 states (I'm not going to
count Hawaii in this) place a huge burden on the income they draw from
the taxation on the sale of that very resource.

There have been even scarier concepts though - try the concept of
tax-per-mile. Some yahoo's want to put in GPS systems in your vehicle
with a transponder so they can track how many miles your vehicle
drives. Every x months they would send you a bill - some suggest as
high as a nickel per mile - for the actual amount of driving your
vehicle made. Call me paranoid but if I'm going to have a transmitter
in my car pointing out my exact location at any time, I want control
over it.

It's a really funny thing to watch... kinda like the tobacco issue.
The states use income from tobacco sales to fund medically related
projects. Now that it's illegal to smoke inside a public place in New
York State they're wondering where all their money for Medicaid went.
This has twinges of the same feel to it.
