My parents' cat does the same thing.  He's never happier than when he's 
in a shoebox, sides bulging to hold his not unimpressive mass.  He's a 
big old boy, and strong, too.  He seems to forget most of the time, but 
then some other cat will corner him in a fight and it's like a light 
goes on over his head:  "Hey, wait!  I'm twice as big as this guy!" and 
he comes out swinging like the heavyweight champ he is.  Brain damage 
and all!
