A lot of the cats that do odd things , like bite and scratch for no
reason etc. have behavioural problems due to how they've been treated.

Sometimes it is hard to pin down, but it has to do with their
interactions with people. I think very rarely the cat has a genetic
defect that causes some sort of dementia. Most people don't have
Pedigree cats, and in animals most of these defects seem to occur in
the pedigree breeds where you can almost predict what the animal will
die of or suffer at a particular age.
