I just bought the set on Saturday and read the Magician's Nephew and
the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

I had read it as a kid, but only remembered the general events and so
I was curious to read it again before I saw the movie. I remember
liking the later books better over the first 2, but we'll see - I'm
not sure I'll continue reading.

My adult take on the 2 books are that they're fairy tales for kids.
Maybe this is obvious, but as compared to Lord of the Rings, they're
definitely kid's books. I'd say for younger kids rather than, say,
Harry Potter. I don't have kids, but I'd say in the 7-12 range is
about right.

That being said, the characters and events really stick with you
despite the simple writing style. While it's very derivative of the
Bible, it's very accessible and tells a story kids will understand.

Some of the contradictions were interesting. For example all of the
Narnian animals can talk, but the Beavers had a ham shank. So did
they kill li'l talking piggy to eat him? Wouldn't that make them
"evil"?

Well, I'm glad to hear the movie is good - I'm looking forward to it!
