I have read that they will obey better if you do not allow them on the furniture. Our last dog listened to me (who shooed her off) but not to my daughter who did not. Our current dog definitely considers me the alpha but listens to the daughter since that is who feeds her. This tells me it may depend on the dog. One thing though is true. Dogs are pack animals. Whoever they consider to be leader of the pack, they need to understand that it is one of the humans ;)
