Here's how I have my home network rigged, which seems to be mostly like you have in mind: Internet Connection: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Alcatel SpeedTouch Home xDSL Modem -> NetGear RO318 Cable/DSL Security Router (8 x 10/100 Switched Ports) The RO318 does NAT/SPI so it's pretty secure out of the box. Attached to RO318: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Dell Inspiron 7500 Notebook via standard network cable (as it's in the same room) 2. NetGear ME102 Wireless Access Point (uses 802.11b standard) In Family Room: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Gateway Desktop PC with Netgear MA301 Wireless PCI Carrier Card and MA401 Wireless PC Card talking happily to ME102 If you follow the instructions, it all works out of the box. I'm reasonable cluey about this stuff, but no expert, and I haven't had a second's trouble. All the warnings about security, firewalls, etc. on a cable/xDSL connection obviously apply.
