It pretty much depends on the dog and the circumstances. Our last dog
(Goldern retriever? and something?) was very very bright and eager to
please and would heel quite readily. However, more than once she
jumped from a moving car to chase something, which was scary. One time
she went after a herd of deer and never came back. However, we were on
Bois Blanc Island at the time so I finally said well, it may be a big
island, but it's an island, she can't go too far.... the bad thing was
that we were at the time looking fr the cabin we were renting so she
would not have known where home was... We backtracked and told the
people at the general store that we had lost a dog and where we were
staying. This did work, as it was the only store on the island and the
people who found her asked there. But in most cicumstance this we=ould
be a terrible situation and require a lot of visits to the pound.

Our current dog --- forget it. (Pyrenees? Golden retriever? mix?)
Needs a leash when being walked. Will fetch a stick all day long in
the park but needs close supervision when going from point A to point
B. On the other hand, this one does not chase cats...
