The furniture style is mostly designed around the scandinavian modernist aesthetic. IMO it's something you have to commit fully to as your design style to make it work.
The use of laminate wood products is a prominent aspect of the style. There are some really high quality and durable laminates, but to many laminates just look cheap and tacky. Ikea carries a mix of quality but is much less expensive than most of the scandinavian design furniture stores here. I can't say if that translates directly to quality since I haven't been to Ikea for nearly ten years.
