I'm not sure about this one (never read the book) but dammit - there are some really engrossing books that just make awful movies (and vice-versa for what it's worth). Even if they're done well they still suck. ;^) Not every great story is great in every medium. "Dune" is a good example. I really liked the movie for some strange reason... but I know it wasn't "good". (I really DIDN'T like the sci-fi channel mini-series.) The book is so cerebral and internal - it just doesn't translate very well to the screen (I think).
