I forgot I had a lighter the other day, they found it, then asked my
permission to confiscate it. I said sure.  But you always have the option to
store the item or leave it behind in your car or give to someone...or
perhaps plan ahead.

I know that in my case when I carried a small pocket knife regularly I
didn't even think about it. Hell, picking out my socks each day was a
bigger decision. I've had to give up stuff at checkpoint because I
didn't even think about the fact that I had it with me. And the TSA
were complete asses about it.
