Not necessary. I could tell you about a woman who found herself divorced and alone at 24 with two pre-school children, no child support, no marketable skills, and the inflation and sorry job market of the mid-70s.
She got her GED, went to college on financial aid, while working full time packing grapefruit on 3rd shift so her mother could watch the kids, and is now a computer scientist with a six figure salary. Of course, achievement like that assumes the presence of a brain, and a willingness to work.
