If such a statement CAN provoke violence, then I say confront it. If you live with an abusive spouse, you can try to never say anything that might provoke them. But that does not solve the issue, it just leaves you scared all the time, and at some point the jerk will hit you anyway.
I also don't see that I am telling anyone that their deepest belief is stupid. I think I am saying that a violent reaction to offending that belief is not the right response.
