No- but understanding is the key. Will he hit you no matter what you say? Then that understanding should predicate your actions (in this case, probably, "leave"). I'm not advocating treating anybody with kid gloves, compromising our ideals or anything of the kind. I'm saying that provocation for the sake of provocation is wrong whether you're on the playground or the world stage. > I also don't see that I am telling anyone that their deepest belief is > stupid. I think I am saying that a violent reaction to offending that > belief is not the right response. Then it's not you I'm talking about. I'm talking about those that say "it's only a cartoon and they shouldn't take it so seriously so let's show it over and over and over and over until the understand the right way to think." I'll seriously and honestly condemn any violent response to this with you all you like. But the short side of it remains: the prohibition against images of the prophet is no more understandable to me than any other purely religious stricture. I don't understand it - I don't understand how it could provoke violence. But neither can I understand how homosexuality, cow fat in French fries, eating pork or any other religious stricture would inspire the strong feelings that they do.
