True... at least some parts of our society. Other parts celebrate them. Look at recent history: less than 100 years ago racial hatred was rampant and large segments of our society while perhaps not encouraging it did little to stop it. Go back several generations and the situation gets worse. We've fought hard to get where we are today and we still have a long way to go. We like to think that we're enlightened but that veneer, however strong, is thin and new. It has to be maintained and strengthened and the kind of speech I've been hearing lately doesn't help. I'd rather see us projecting the ideals that we hold dear (understanding, compassion, strength of conviction, etc) rather than reflecting the ideals that we're fighting against (intolerance, hatred and arrogance).
