Nope - just plain-jane 10/1000. I use a standard old LinkSys wireless G
router.

It takes a while for large files to transfer over - perhaps on the order a
minute per Gig or more, but streaming even HD video from the box is very
smooth (at least so far).

The box support Gigabit Ethernet and Jumbo frame serving if your network
infrastructure does however (mine don't).

The empty box, the Infrant ReadyNAS 600, is around $600 and accepts up to
four SATA drives.

Definitely - it's just a little Linux file server (the actual box is about
as large as a Shuttle SFF PC). It support Windows, Mac and Unix networking
and authentication schemes and tons of protocols (you can set up the box to
do FTP, HTTP, HTTPs, plus several file-serving and media serving protocols).

The OS is expandable with third-party tools and extensions (right now mostly
for other media servers).

It offers automated snapshot and backup capability (good for office-style
redundancy and historic file access).

It really depends on the drives you use. The Box supports RAID 0,1 and 5
(it automatically attempts to set up a RAID 5 array if you populate it with
four drives although you can start with as many drives as you need/can
afford).

When a drive does go the box alerts you with a blinking light and an email
notification - pop in another drive and wait up to four hours or some for
the array to resynchronize and you're good to go.
