The practice is called praying for intercession. Basically asking the
saint to "put in a good word" for you to God. It is _not_ worshipping
saints. It is _not_ idol worship.

of art in the history of the planet...

So by that logic, Praying(intercession,saintName) = worship(idol)

Does the consuming of the "body of Christ" also denote cannibalism?

Really, this formula really only works if those calculating ignore
what is actually going on.

And yes, saints are considered (by Catholics) "closer to God," hence
their designation as Saints.
