But evolution doesn't "think about things" before it operates.

To be sure a primary evolutionary drive is procreation - but there are
others. Homosexuality might fill some other need, biologically speaking, or
it could be an accident or side-effect.

This all assumes that there is a definite biological driver to it. I think
there is, mind you, but humans are much, much more complex than that. A
human can decide to be homosexual or at least to engage in homosexual
behavior for self-gratification or social reasons.

For example the ancients greeks and romans had very few social taboos when
it came to homosexual behavior. It's likely that not everybody that engaged
in them were in fact, genetically speaking, homosexuals. At the time
however, in some circles, it may have even been impolite NOT to engage in
them.

It's also likely that humans have the most finely tuned sense of sexual
pleasure. That sense can be gratified in many ways with and without a
partner (very few animals masturbate).

With this elaborate (and perhaps evolutionarily useless) sexual drive it
seems natural that there are going to be many paths for its development
within an individual. Again homosexuality might be a "mistake" in that
sense but is still "natural" and is not sickness or something that can be
cured.

Just as issues with the development of the skin sometimes proceeds
differently and leads to freckles so might development of the libido
sometimes lead to homosexuality.
