I will suggest David Drake's Lord of the Isles/Crown of the Isles series. He is moving into the more fantasy side with his works. It is a sword and sorcery series that I have read 3 out of so far. The first is a little slow, but the others I've read are much better. One thing I find interesting about him is he uses other stories (the Illiad, the Greater and Lesser Eddas, etc.) and histories as the plot of his stories.
