That sounds like an interesting series.  I'll check it out.

I will suggest David Drake's Lord of the Isles/Crown of the Isles series.  He 
is moving into the more fantasy side with his works.  It is a sword and sorcery 
series that I have read 3 out of so far.  The first is a little slow, but the 
others I've read are much better.  

One thing I find interesting about him is he uses other stories (the Illiad, 
the Greater and Lesser Eddas, etc.) and histories as the plot of his stories.  
Apparently his Hammer's Slammers series was based loosely on Greek mythology 
told as a space opera.
