I prefer that expression to gay or queer. Just 'cause the latter is caused by (if not actively) passive-agressive gay bashing. Fruity's okay 'cause that's not how most of us/them identify... although I must say the phrase "clown shoes" makes me cringe... for that matter, any mention of clowns basically is like nails on a chalk-board to me. :P
