I would guess that "reliability" metrics mostly irrelevant.  Auto
purchasing is usually at least 40% emotional even for the most
practical buyer.  If this weren't the case you wouldn't see bling
wheels, spoilers, SUVs, etc.

Even someone who buys brand X because brand Y is "unreliable" is being
emotional.  In the case of VW, if you're even considering them you're
an emotional car buyer.

For my part, I'm a 100% emotional car buyer.  I don't care about
reliability because I lease and about the only metric that has ever
given me pause is safety.  I usually get AWD, I always buy good tires,
and I want my car to have a good crash test rating.

Other than that, it's all about fun!
