HDMI may be a concern but everything else left out (the card reader and
WIFI) could be added via external USB devices.  And even without HDMI the
lower priced model can still deliver HD via component.

So it's not a huge loss and cuts the price down for those that don't want
those things.

It should be much better for DVD/Blu-Ray use simply because the controller
is wireless.  The media center/player stuff in PS3 looks a lot like the PSP
in function which is just fine by me.  The DVD player on the PS2 was nice
but the interface for it was an afterthought at best.
