It started when Arafat rejected a chance to have almost everything he wanted. Barak was leader then, not Sharon. And it's been stated many times by Palestinian officials that they were planning it for a while before. Sharon visiting Jerusalem (he never went near the mosce) was just an excuse. Of course, the Palestinians don't allow the Jews to worship at their holiest site. They even go so far as to claim it's not even ours. The gall.
