Well the point was to outine the modern form of terrorism in Northern
Ireland and branching out from there to Dublin and London (e.g., the
attempted assignation of Margret Thatcher).

You've basically got 2 groups:

1.) The Republicans who want a united Ireland and are mostly Catholic, and
2.) The Loyalists who want a Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom.

The 2 groups then have militant and political branches such as Sinn
Fein, one of the most (in)famous. There's also the UVF, UFF, etc.

So the question is, when did this modern form begin taking shape?

Well, most people say the early 60s were fairly calm and that the
founding of the UVF in the mid-sixites was the very early beginning
with the riots of 1968 during the NICRA marches to be the spark.

The UVF bombings in 1969 are considered to be the "first blood" of the
modern era. So, with as much as we hear about the IRA, if we look at
those late 60s events, we could say that the UVF and Loyalists started
it.

But THAT'S a whole different thread :)
