Yeah, a great altenative is Russel's suggestion, but that ain't happening either. I guess the hope would be that the Dems, having sat on the sidelines for the last 6 years will figure out that they better pull out the magic or they're goners. It would probably wake up some some Republicans too. You might even see some type of coup led by McCain or Warner types ... or maybe a fiscal-led coup, even better!
