> How many .. learned the same way?

February 1995 I was hired as an Art Director for a small Educational
Videotape Library company in Olathe, KS.

March of 1995, my boss dropped the HTML Bible on my desk and said, "I
want a web site."

I started learning HTML.

My first web server (December 95-ish) was WebStar 1.0 on a Mac (I
think I was one of about 3 customers... :-\). It interfaced with a
FileMaker Pro database to serve dynamic content.

Late in 1996 we decided to open a small web hosting business (in
addition to my art director/webmaster duties) and invested in some
brand spanking new Pentium 133 (IIRC) boxes to host web sites and
databases.

We decided to go with Netscape Servers because IIS was really really
crappy back then. Since Netscape Enterprise had Server Side Javascript
as its language built in it was a no-brainer to start using that. We
evaluated CF 1.5 I think but the programmer that was hired to consult
with me didn't trust "this new technology would be reliable as PERL or
some other CGI"

oi.

In January 1998 I quit that job and went to work for myself. In
November of that same year I bought myself a copy of CF 4.0 and the
two CFWACKs and switched once and for all. It was apparent almost
immediately the ease of everything.

I never looked back.

in January 2001 I went to work for the company I work for now, hired
as a consultant to fix the ASP based CMS that they had just spent 200K
on. In three weeks, in my off hours (basically 2-3 hours a night) I
completely rewrote their system and premiered it to my boss the same
day I was due to roll out the fixes in the ASP system.

I have been working on, tinkering with and improving that system ever since.

:-)

oh and...CF is dying :-P

:-D
