Because no one else will. Because we value democracy and we want to see it
thrive. We must demonstrate to the Arab and Muslim world that we believe in
democracy, even if that means and Arab Muslim democracy much different than
our own.

Had Iraqis never been able to hold elections or form a government, we would
not still be in Iraq. But they did both- against a backdrop of brutal
violence. Should we now abandon them when they have come so far? Should we
now abandon the very roots of Arab democracy? Such a move would be
short-sighted and self-defeating. Just as we have used our military might
and diplomatic efforts to defend Israel, so must we now defend Iraq.
