Agreed. I generally like the Time as well. Though I disagree with some of
the things they write, they have some of the best and most thoughtful
journalists and writers in the profession. But like you say with the
reference to the record industry, print journalism has struggled mightily in
the face of competition from the Internet.

Their challenge is that they don't understand how to monetize the
technology. Imagine if they had some of the guys from Google working for
them - their site would look totally different, but it would generate a LOT
more revenue in the form of advertising, without a doubt. The gilded age of
newspapers has passed. In fifty years there might not even be a New York
Times if they don't figure out how to reverse course. How about this for a
next move- Google buys the NY Times and incorporates its content into a new
media model for journalism. I'd like to see it for no other reason than the
fact that Google could easily absorb the cost of running the paper in the
short term while they figure out how to gut it and get rid of all the crap
that they are losing money on.
