The single biggest thing we could do to lower CO2 emissions is move from
internal combustion engines to fuel cells or some other non-polluting
technology. Note that I specifically exclude electric vehicles from this
category because the electricity has to be generated somehow, and mostly
that means coal-fired power plants.

The next biggest thing we could do is convert all the coal-fired power
plants in the world to use clean coal technology, but it is very, very
expensive to retrofit old plants to use clean coal technology. That cost
would have to be passed on to consumers, and no one wants to pay higher
rates. The only current alternative to coal that meets the power generation
needs of the world today is nuclear. Check out this stat sheet on percentage

Personally, I would be all for converting to fuel cells for cars and nuclear
for electrical capacity over the next fifty years.
