I am not sure about Afghanistan but in Iraq, on the FOBs, we have over 200 local nationals that work on the base every day. They come in in the morning and leave in the evening. Add to that the few dozen interpreters that go out on patrols with us, live with us, and you can bet that there are at least a couple of bad apples in the bunch who are gong to tell things to the bad guys. I am sure that the same is happening in Afghanistan.
As far as units not being ready, well you have to consider that many units have just completed their tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as Gitmo and Bosnia. Now when a unit returns, of course they are not ready to turn right around and go back They have equipment and personal items that are on a boat somewhere arriving to the states, the soliders are off of stop-loss which means they can now transfer to another unit or get out, so they have to re-fill the ranks. They have to rest a while as there is really no time to rest in country. There are other factors as well but you get the picture. We know that Afghanistan is not totally under control, but I think that it is better off right now than Iraq is. I mean, at least in Afghanistan we have NATO troops there keeping peace and what not. It is getting to be spring time there and in Iraq, and that is when the insurgents start coming out and doing their thing or, in the case of Iraq, stepping up their attacks. Expect a lot more attacks in both regions in a few months. And this is NOT a national secret. All you have to do is a little research in both countries and you will see a trend. As far as Korea, how is that Bushes fault? Even if Kerry or Gore were elected, N. Korea would still be who they are today. I don't think that they care who is President. They just want to flex what little muscle they have. That country (or rather their leader) is suffering from a severe case of short man complex. And I am sure that once again, no matter who is president, Iran would still be wanting and making nukes. Again I do not think that they care who is President. These are my thoughts.
