I see.

You don't understand though. For Windows Gaming, performance wise, a
PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo Quad Core 6600 processor and a single
Nvidia 8800GTX card will outperform any Mac that I can configure on
this website, and it will cost less, about US$3,610.00 vs US$4,644.00
(both without monitors).

That Gaming performance also translates to Encoding performance, 3D
Rendering performance etc.

***I'm being asked, in effect, to pay --US$1,034.00-- extra for the
case design and the OS***

Now, sticking with the PC for an extra US$1,034.00 I can throw in the
EXTREME Quad Core version the Core2 Duo Quad Core QX6700 and TWO
8800GTX 768MB graphics cards and that runs me up to US$4,470.00 still
leaving me with US$174.00 to play around with. And this is from a
Boutique Enthusiast PC store, Velocity Micro (www.velocitymicro.com)
not even Dell or one of those other mass marketed PC vendors who's
prices may be even better.

Mac OSX is NOT worth a US$1,034.00 price premium at a decided
Performance deficit to me, regardless of how excellent I think it is.

I thought for a minute that things had changed and the user could
upgrade the Mac hardware with video cards available at retail.

Until such time as we have complete configuration options on the Mac
it isn't worth using it as a dual boot gaming machine. Having just
three graphics card options, the X1900XT,the 7300GT(a Low End graphics
card) or the Quadro FX 4500 isn't a huge amount of choice really.

The X1900 XT option will probably be worth it for those that game
occasionally. As an enthusiast though, for US$4,644 I can get a
screaming fast PC that will be future proofed for at least the next
two years.

I could never understand how the Mac could bill itself as a Consumer -
centric, Multimedia - centric platform and not have anything close to
a variety or quantity of home user oriented games.

Funny enough, if Apple were able to promote the Mac as a gaming
platform sales would probably increase phenomenally, but they would
also have to relax their grip on the configuration options. They keep
choosing to keep the latter option.
