I had such a challenge getting any of my former employers to even CONSIDER
telecommuting that I had to go into business for myself!

The mentality was "well, if there's an emergency, how will we reach you??"
(um, ever heard of a PHONE??). Here in the Midwest I think there is a
definite resistance to new ways of doing things, and I've had a lot of
micromanager-type bosses who just couldn't let go of the control they had
over me when I was actually present, in an office. I'm kind of a rebellious
soul so the idea of someone having control over my life/working
habits/whatever kind of chafed.

I've never had a problem with distractions because I try to keep all things
in balance. If I'm frustrated with something and feel like chucking it all
to go play, I let myself -- but only for an hour or so and then I make up
the time lost later. That's the beauty of telecommuting in my book -- as
long as you keep your clients/employers happy and get your work done, you're
free to structure your work/life as you choose. I probably work HARDER now
than I ever did for any employer in a traditional office setting.
