I disagree (of course!) in an least two ways. 1) I don't think that innovation is limited to the creation of new markets. MS innovates in many ways (the biggest recent innovation is the completely new interaction model in Office 2007). 2) MS is definitely working to create new markets. Their work in robotics standardization is incredibly interesting for example. They're putting a lot of effort, time and resources on the line there for a market that is probably still 10 years out. Xbox Live is older, yes, but (especially with the upcoming Vista Live) is a continuing innovation in community building. The sad truth is that innovation, real ground-breaking, market-segment-creating innovation like you're talking about is exceedingly rare at any time. I can't honestly think of a company that's really, truly innovating in the way you describe. Apple, MS, Google, etc - they're not. They're all polishing existing market segments; evolving them rather than creating them. Who really is innovating in the way you describe today?
