I agree. I saw an interview with a professor yesterday who said that Cho Seong-Hui was the most disturbed student that she had ever had in her 20+ years of teaching. She recognized it, and alerted the university. When told that his writings amounted to free speech and that couldn't take any action in the case, she decided to take it upon herself to remove him from the classroom and work with him one-on-one. Her motivation was twofold: The safety and stability of the other students in the classroom and a concerted effort to reach and attempt to help Cho.
After a semester of this, she had made no inroads. He was just as isolated and dark as before. It's my opinion that the university was correct in respecting his privacy and his free speech. This professor did the right thing by trying to help him, but at the same time retaining the health and security of her other students. I truly believe that sometimes you can do everything right, and things still turn to shit. That same wonderful gift of thought that makes humans so unique, is what ultimately makes us so dangerous.
