Just about any weightlifter will tell you that you have to eat meat to
gain muscle and my experience confirms this. I've tried solely whey
protein and, while I can maintain muscle, I can't really increase.
When I eat meat I can up my weight 5% per week which is pretty
shocking. On whey I'll go a month with no increase.

So I dunno exactly what the mechanism is, but the human body seems to
really like meat when trying to build muscle.
