I am very sorry for your loss. That is a tough thing for a person and
couple to go through.

Not a sure cure, but what has worked for me in my past was when I
start to get that way (and it has happened a few times, not wanting to
leave the house, and not wanting to talk to people, not wanting to
read or even watch tv), I force myself to get OUT and do things I
would do if I was actually enjoying myself. At first it completely
sucks. But here and there, I forget myself, and get lost in the moment
of whatever I am doing.

I find that over time, I forget myself more and more often, and
eventually start to come out of it.

Getting my body active, and getting my mind active, seems to
eventually get me through it. (It may be like treating a common cold.
no matter what you do, eventually it runs its course and you get
better, but at least trying to cure it gives you something to do.)

I have memorized the popes and presidents, countries of the world,
poems and important speeches, top 10 paintings by each master. I have
planned what I would do if I won the lottery (for 1 million, 10
million, 100 million), and what my perfect house would be. I have
assembled a "gentlemans" sport kit by making pieces and yardsaling and
junk store shopping. I know how many steps it is to the grocery store.
I have visited every bus stop and T stop in boston, and checked out
what was around each one. I am conversant in the dewy decimal system.
i took up ikebana flower arranging.

Anything to distract myself from myself for a while.

Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Find someone you can talk to,
and a couple people who can pry you out of your chair and distract you
for a time.
