umm, you don't understand the Roman Catholic religion if you can say so.

This is a tenant of Roman Catholic faith. The Pope merely restated it.

There was a softening of this position previously, primarily because
of exactly what you mentioned : The divisions it caused etc.

But the church never actually altered its position on this.

As to why the Pope has decided to mention this, and reaffirm this now
is open to debate.

But this is certainly not something new which came from him.

Also it is not the same words. The interpretations of the other
religions are different from the Catholic Church.
