Dude you are all over the place on this post. First, Rolling Stone is a joke. They cater to college-age stoners who just want to be mad at "the man" or "the system". Who cares what they think? Not me.
Of course people are making money during the war, because of the war, and from the war, but people are always making money- that is the nature of a capitalist economy. Our system is more open than ever before, but that doesn't change the fact that the biggest players will always get the lion's share of contracts from the government. Little players occasionally get the wheels greased courtesy of their local congressman, but again, that's the way our system works. People who imagine the war as an excuse to make money are conspiracy-seeking fools. Meanwhile, everyone's favorite example of graft- Halliburton- sold its KBR subsidiary because it wasn't profitable enough. As anyone who has tried working for the government will tell you, the money is good, but not as good as a really successful private enterprise, e.g. oil and gas exploration, which is what Halliburton specializes in. http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=14582 Re: the poppy fields, are you referring to Afghanistan? We made a conscious decision not to do a lot about that country. We have a relatively small force there- enough to keep the Taliban at bay. I don't think we have much interest in doing anything else there. Sure, we would like to help them rebuild, but it isn't that urgent. Besides, a massive spraying campaign might have the same effect there as it has had with coca in South America- to identify and help to propagate spraying-resistant strains of the plant. The past is never so grand, nor the future ever so bleak, as we imagine in our darkest moments. On 9/13/07, Dinner wrote: > > WWII isn't Iraq, for sure.
