I've had Audis for the last 10 years (A6, Allroad, S4, A4) and my
experience has been good, but we always lease and we've never kept one
past 50k; although I"m aware of some of the horror stories.

That being said, the 4 people I know who drive the mileage you do all
got VW TDI wagons and all get about 52 mpg hwy. None of them have had
any problems with the car and I think that particular engine is a damn
good one.

One thing to keep in mind with the VW TDIs is that 2006 is the last
model year they are/were legal to sell; that is, there are no 2007s
with a TDI and the new TDI coming out in 2008 has improved scrubber
tech.

What that has meant is that the 2006s can either be purchased for a
song or a premium depending on your area of the country or you could
wait for the 2008s to come out in the spring.

I always lease because, for us, it's a better deal. If we like the
car we can buy it after the lease runs out and if we don't we just
return it. That way if you do get a POS the worst case scenario is
the duration of the lease during which time VAG owns it and pays for
the service.

Plus, with leasing, you negotiate the "trade-in" price up front so
there are no risks down the road; leasing allows you to screw yourself
up front which, IMO, is much better than a surprise screwing in the
end. But ... YMMV :)
