LiveCycle is primarily a workflow engine, that is the core of the original
product that became LiveCycle server. Adobe has extended the original
product with PDF integration, Data Services, etc. All told, what it allows
you to do is build workflow applications that leverage the capabilities of
Adobe's other product offerings. You could, for instance, build a workflow
system fronted by a Flex app, running CFMX with integrated Data Services on
the server, all of which integrates PDF as the data entry mechanism for the
workflow in LiveCycle. The filled out PDF can go through the workflow and
end with a completed PDF document stored in a document management system
like Documentum for future reference.

The market position for the product is in the replacement of paper-based
business processes, which can be modeled in LC and replaced one by one
without having to deploy a big integrated enterprise application at a cost
of months of effort and millions of dollars in licensing and consulting
fees.
