That's a double-edged sword.

The only way plenty of guns would be preventative is if the people that
might break in know about them.  And if they do "plenty" of guns is a very
tempting score.  Guns (especially handguns) are easily portable and very
valuable.

Kind of like putting a dozen "Wii" boxes out to the curb on garbage day - it
does add to your risk to have people know that you have in-demand,
highly-valuable, highly-portable items.

If those who might rob you don't know about the guns then they can't be
preventative.

I'm not sure where the scale falls between prevention and attraction but is
something to think about.
