I'm not saying you're wrong, but I find it difficult to buy that the possibility of guns is a primary motivator here. My grandparents have lived in the same house for 65 years and there's never been a break-in on their street (Tonawanda, NY - suburb of Buffalo). To my knowledge there's never been a break-in on the street I live on now (Scranton, PA, although some of the cars parked on the street got rifled last week). I lived 15 years in Boston with no problems (once a flasher accosted my wife on her way to work, actually). Again I'm not saying you're wrong, but I am saying - guns or not - it's not hard to find areas where there hasn't been any burglaries for 20 years. Looking at the stats it's also clear that most burglars prefer to strike when nobody is actually home (when a gun wouldn't be all that useful). Security lights and a close-knit community help prevent this more than guns ever would I would think. People sometimes pick on us, but whenever there's an odd noise outside you can be sure of seeing at few of us (my neighbors and I) out on our front lawns in the middle of the night.
