when i was on windows I hated itunes, after I moved to a mac I fell in love with it and couldn't even imagine using something else now. For my iphone it's just amazing, it keeps everything in order.. contacts, songs, ical.... just plug it in and a few seconds later its good.
You don't have to use itunes, there are plenty of 3rd party apps that you can add, delete, transfer, burn .. w/e to an ipod. And you don't have to use itunes store either but you got to add a few extra steps if you don't , which of course people bitch about even though they have to do the same amount or more with what they got. On their itunes store.. it wasn't up to apple to but drm on it, it was the record companies. radio: yeah they dont have radio, must not be a very requested feature or they would have it by now, plus wifi will cause some interference with radio signals so that posses a problem. A new zune for less that $100.. yes but those are the first zunes, i'm sure you can get a second generation ipod for that as well since thats about what the first zunes compare to. The sanza's are nice, i had one but they are out of date quickly and companies like that keep trying to re-invent the wheel and really not many people care.
